What Is It?
Antenatal care (ANC) is comprehensive medical supervision and support provided to pregnant women throughout gestation. It ensures the health of the mother and the developing fetus while identifying potential complications early for timely intervention. Regular antenatal visits build awareness about pregnancy, nutrition, exercise, and warning signs of high-risk conditions.
Procedure
ANC includes regular health check-ups, weight and blood pressure monitoring, urine and blood tests, ultrasound scans, and vaccination updates. Nutritional counselling, supplementation (iron, folic acid), and lifestyle guidance are provided. High-risk pregnancies receive specialised care, including detailed fetal monitoring, genetic screening, and risk-based delivery planning. Antenatal care also educates mothers about labour, breastfeeding, and postpartum recovery.
Why It Happens / Best Age / Treatment
Recommended for all pregnant women, ideally starting in the first trimester. ANC reduces maternal and neonatal risks such as preterm birth, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and anemia. Timely and personalised care ensures both mother and baby are healthy and prepared for a safe delivery.
